Route 5/15 SB Exit 87 access to I-91 SB now open - one year earlier than was originally announced.

T
he Route 5/15 Southbound Exit 87 access to I-91 Southbound and Route 5/15 Southbound has reopened to traffic on October 22, 2020, one year earlier than was originally announced. This roadway has been closed since last September to facilitate its reconstruction as part of the Project. The Project stipulates that a portion of I-91 Northbound in Hartford be widened, including the widening of the bridge (Bridge 1466) that spans this access. Thus, it was necessary to close and reconstruct this roadway--lowering it for proper height clearance under the new bridge. While the roadway will reopen to motorists, the I-91 Northbound bridge at this site will remain under construction.

For the past year, detour signs have notified Route 5/15 Southbound motorists seeking I-91 Southbound that they must take Exit 86 to enter I-91 Southbound, while access to Brainard Road from the Route 5/15 Southbound Exit 87 remained open. With the full reopening of Exit 87, motorists seeking I-91 Southbound from Route 5/15 Southbound will be able to access it via both Exit 86 and Exit 87.
